I actually recommend going this route if it's viable, exFAT is a remarkably fragile file system, lacking some of the safeguards that were present in FAT32, it's predecessor. Then it's up to you if you want to reformat their disk and move the footage back.Īlternatively, if you don't need to write to the disk, you can format it as NTFS in Windows and the Mac will read it just fine. Take it to the PC, copy the footage to that. Fun, right?įind another disk, format it in macOS using exFAT and MBR. So you can use macOS to make an exFAT disk that is incompatible with Windows, and you can use Windows to make an exFAT disk that is incompatible with macOS. macOS only supports exFAT with, IIRC, 4 KiB block sizes. Windows supports exFAT with a wide variety of block sizes. Windows only supports exFAT on MBR disks. MacOS supports exFAT on disks with either MBR or GPT partition tables. exFAT is supposed to be a simple solution to the problem of >4 GiB files in an OS-agnostic filesystem, but really it's a big mess.

OK, you got problems, and I know the solution. Relink to the original footage and the project is good to go. I copy the footage from work to an HFS+ drive, pull it off at home using hfsexplorer, do my editing, then transfer the Premiere project + any additional files that were created back to work with either an exFAT drive or online. It may not work for you depending on your tasks, but what I've been doing in these less-than-ideal COVID times is essentially a proxy workflow. If installing things to the work computers isn't on the table, you can purchase the NTFS read/write add on for your Mac at home.

I have a feeling that the simplest solution if this is going to be an ongoing thing is to splurge for the Paragon software - it's $20. It's not an ideal solution for footage because of the sizes involved, but uploading to a FTP server or cloud service and downloading to the other machine bypasses the issue.that's not a practical solution, I'm guessing. Realistically it would probably be fine I still work with exFAT drives somewhat regularly and have yet to encounter a problem.but there's definitely more opportunity for things to go wrong. I wouldn't feel comfortable trusting exFAT for the only copy of any data.

Unfortunately, without installing extra drivers and 3rd party software, I believe exFAT is the only format both OSs will natively read & write. Looking for something more local?
